Rethinking Justice: The Susan Smith Case Through a Mental Health Lens
Hey, Earnest Mann here! In this episode, I'm tackling the controversial Susan Smith case, presenting a perspective you've probably never heard before. For those who need a recap: in 1994, Susan Smith tragically killed her two young sons by rolling her car into a lake. She’s been in prison for 30 years and was just denied parole. But here’s the kicker—I believe she never belonged in prison to begin with.
Mental Illness and Justice: A Misguided Conviction?
Smith’s actions were undoubtedly horrifying, but let’s address the critical context—her severe mental health issues. Despite early signs of mental instability, including childhood trauma and multiple suicide attempts, the system ignored these red flags. She wasn’t just “bad”; she was unwell. Instead of prison, she should have been committed to a secure mental health facility. Instead, prosecutors—driven by what I call “hillbilly justice”—pushed for harsh punishments, even the death penalty.
The Bigger Problem: Misguided Justice in America
This isn’t just about Susan Smith. It’s about the larger failure of the justice system to handle cases involving mental illness. The obsession with punishment over rehabilitation reflects a troubling mindset, particularly in certain regions where evangelical fervor fuels an appetite for retribution rather than understanding. We need a shift from prisons to mental health facilities for individuals who commit crimes under the influence of psychological disorders.
Why This Matters
The Susan Smith case isn’t just a 30-year-old tragedy; it’s a cautionary tale of misjudged justice. If we continue ignoring the role of mental illness in crimes, we’re not just failing individuals like Smith—we’re perpetuating a broken system.
So, let’s start thinking smarter. Join me every Monday and Friday at 6:00 a.m. to question everything you think you know about justice, society, and life itself.
I'm a deep thinking contrarian, a very pragmatic idiocythrope. I believe that function determines desirability and legitimacy. I don't like the superficial and/or pretentious, nor the shallow. I speak the truth as best as I know it, as a professor of tautology.
With friends, I desire quality over quantity. I know some very important life truths I'm just waiting for you to ask about. I have found in life, many people talk about happiness, but are unwilling to pay the price, or believe they shouldn't have to, because they are entitled to it, but I know with absolute certainty, that such beliefs are always due to stupidity, Insanity, or some degree of both.
This is not just another YouTube channel; I'm seeking to build a community of Intelligent thinkers daring to discuss, - and say - what the hell really needs to be said, so do the right thing, leave your thoughts, for me and others to possibly learn from, and subscribe, and tell everyone else in the world you know about me, and you'll stand a really good chance, of me remembering you, in my will!
I believe we really can change the current status quo of an idiotic and fucked up purposeless treadmill existence, and actually improve this world, but it requires intelligence, honesty, and BALLS, all three of which are currently in short supply, especially the balls.
Thank you for taking the time, to read this, and remember to avoid anything or anyone stupid, as much as possible, your life will be far better for it.
Please consider, that by visiting my website and/or donating to this show, you're supporting an actual person, not some mega corporation, that wouldn't know human compassion if it hit them over the head!
I look forward to hearing from you, and until next Monday or Friday remember, the world may be misinformed and batshit crazy, but YOU, don’t have to be!

00:00 I just want you to know that by being here you're appreciated for your curiosity always a sign of intelligence and wisdom which means through you despite all the crazy there is hope for the world yet thank you for being here I'm going to give you a different perspective on the Susan Smith case you've most likely never heard and when I say that I mean exactly that I'm advocating for her to be released from prison for those of you who don't know either because you didn't give a damn back when it took place 30 years ago or
00:52 you didn't even exist yet Susan Smith killed her two young boys ages three and one by strapping them into their car seats in her car and then rolling the car into John D long Lake in South Carolina in 1994 so she's been in prison for 30 years she came up for a chance of parole this month and of course just like I predicted she was denied well a hell of a lot has changed in my life in 30 years and I sure as hell would love Lov to be 30 again but the one thing that hasn't changed was my opinion concerning her fate my opinion
01:38 is exactly the same now as it was then she should not be and should not have been put in prison and ironically she herself became a victim of the American hillbilly justice system because apparently all of those so-called professionals at that time particular ly the prosecution simply could not grasp the concept of mental illness unless it was someone in their immediate family of course in the very broadest terms there are two times when a person is mentally incapacitated when they are high on drugs which of course includes alcohol
02:23 or when they have a pre-existing mental illness and that definitely was the case with Susan Smith and there's also more to it than that alone I've also wanted to mention the very worst possible scenario with people who have serious mental health issues and are high on large amounts of drugs and or alcohol that is a very volatile situation but in Smith's case I don't believe drugs or alcohol were involved at the time time of the crime but she was definitely not playing with a full dick now I knew this immediately as soon
03:09 as the story broke and this was long before her court-ordered psychological evaluation so how did I know that because I'm a super sleuth Law and Order crime fighter no actually um nothing special I just have a few function brain cells in my head I believe that if a person has an IQ just slightly over that of an onion they should be able to understand that nobody does that to their children unless they're not playing with a full deck that they don't have both ores in the water in other words they're as
03:55 crazy as the day is long the irony here though is how absolutely sadistically insane it was for putting her in prison and as a matter of fact during the trial those sadistic bastards were calling for the death penalty but the jury denied them that which made the persecution really sad because they absolutely led to send people to prison but would really give some great sadistic orgasm is the death penalty I would also like to just briefly mention that Susan Smith as a child had a well a really up childhood being sexually molested and
04:49 trying to kill herself twice by the age of 16 this of course made no difference to the intellectually challenged Evangelical prosecutors who Proclaim we going to see if we can't get some justice up in here my point is that from the time she walked into that kangaroo hillbilly Court her fate was sealed the trial was just a formality now before you start thinking that I'm a soft bleeding heart liberal on matters such as this you'd be very wrong I do believe that people should pay for crime however by and large I
05:33 don't believe in prisons but that's another discussion alog together and I definitely don't have a problem with capital punishment but again no long prison sentences on death row but in Susan Smith's case and actually in many cases similar to this these people belong in mental health facilities not prisons I don't know what it is about the south exactly I lived in the South for many years I met many wonderful people but amongst a certain segment of the population almost always associated with
06:16 some kind of heavy duty crazy Evangelical Christian craziness those people are quite frightening because they love and I do mean love to inflict pain suffering and hopefully death to whoever they deem terrible evildoers full of Satan and all the evil in the entire world damn Nation so yeah to say this in my own special way if you do what Susan Smith did yeah that pretty much constitutes bat crazy they need to go directly to the funny farm do not pass go do not collect $200 but prison look we've all endlessly heard
07:09 from the so-called professionals concerning a defendant's capability to stand trial that is all bunch of anyone who's not super whacked out on drugs or alcohol and does what she did is totally badshit crazy and belongs in a secure mental health facility not a prison so if convicting a crazy person who actually needs to be in a secure mental health facility isn't crazy I don't know what the hell is I'm going to wrap this up and by telling you well what I really feel needs to be said if any real Justice would have been
08:00 done in the Susan Smith case Not only would she have been involuntarily committed to a secure mental health facility but she would have been joined by those who tried to put her in prison because I feel it should be self-evident that anyone who shows such a cous disregard for human suffering endlessly using emotionally manipulative arguments as graphic as possible attempting to murder another person by calling on the death penalty in the guise of justice is psychopathic and not only should be disbarred but put into a mental health
08:51 care facility themselves preventing them from administering any further justice upon those who clearly are not capable of rational decision making so assuming you're capable of rational decision making if you want to know more about well just about anything Park your ass here every Monday and Friday at 6:00 a.m.
